When it's too hot to cook...

cool as a cucumber

cool as a cucumber

It's been seriously hot here in Portland, I mean "who cranked on the furnace?" hot & the thought of cooking or pretty much doing anything for that matter has been feeling like a mountain of a challenge. When the temp hits 90+ it's definitely time to think about eating raw, little to no "cooking" the better, just a lot of slicing!  I hit the PSU Farmers Market yesterday morning as I do every Saturday & sliced up this cooling, easy, breezy lunch made with fresh goodies grown by the good farmers of Oregon as well as the incredibly fresh simply smoked salmon (best of the season as I was told by the fine people at the Smokery due to this time being the peak spawning season meaning the fattiest, richest salmon to be had). After slicing the Japanese cukes super thin, I "pickled" it with lemon juice, a dash of rice wine vinegar, fresh dill, capers, salt & pepper & let it sit for about 10 minutes.  Pile on the cukes & salmon with sliced heirloom tomatoes & shallots on a sesame bagel (I love Schwartz Bros bagels) with a smear of Nancy's cultured cream cheese & you're in heaven. No need to turn on the oven or stove which is #priceless during this intense heat spell! Keep cool & enjoy all the abundant freshness to be had at your local farmers market wherever you may be, it's seriously #goodeats!  Happy Sunday!

renewed site renewed vision

it's been a while since i last posted & realizing half of the year has come & gone. we've been busy remodeling our first home & as remodeling goes, seemingly no end in sight...  my designs have been on the back burner for the past several months but now that our home is in a livable condition,  i feel energized & ready to start creating again.  so with this new energy, i put a heaping amount of time & love into this new site bringing both of my labels, rizom designs & leilei aloha under one roof, so to speak.  my hope is for a cohesive space, an organized, streamlined site that makes it easier to share what i love & create.  please browse around & check back often for regular posts. for now, i leave you with a spread in the beautiful spring/summer issue of oregon home magazine featuring my little redwood tote bag.  thanks so much to snow blackwood & the oregon home staff for their generous love! here's a link to their stunning magazine if you'd like to browse their latest issue!  http://www.oregonhomemagazine.com/

a path with heart

“A path is only a path, and there is no affront, to oneself or to others, in dropping it if that is what your heart tells you . . . Look at every path closely and deliberately. Try it as many times as you think necessary. Then ask yourself alone, one question . . . Does this path have a heart? If it does, the path is good; if it doesn't it is of no use.”― Carlos Castaneda

a path with heart
a path with heart

I've asked myself this question for what seems an eternity, 'What is my path?'  My walks on the beach, through a park or climbing a mountain gives me good footing for my mind and sometimes the path reveals itself to you, a path with heart, the only kind to take...Aloha Friday!
