Joshua Tree

I'm an ocean girl at heart ~ I don't feel like myself when I stray too far from the seashore but having said that, there's a purification that happens in the desert that is unlike anything I receive from the salty sea ~ the physical differences are quite obvious but when I feel at the end of my rope, grieving deeply or about to embark on a new life and must leave the old one behind, I find myself longing for the desert ~ the purification of the burn, drying out, turning to ash, the dying spread around by the great winds & to be born again, these are the powerful gifts of the desert.  We drove out to Joshua Tree in search of some of this purification & as always, we were humbled by the beauty and power of nature and the certain melancholy loneliness. But the best part was stumbling upon an oasis in the desert, the Mojave Sands Motel and meeting and hanging with the owner/designer Blake Simpson.  Words cannot describe the beauty he has bestowed on this humble old motel he bought, stripped down to it's bones & painstakingly re-created for over 8 years ~ if there was ever a true labor of love, this was it....  We love meeting people like Blake who deeply inspires us with his vision and passion for creating something really worthy & a creation that will undoubtedly stand the test of time.  Flipping through the thought provoking selection of books in our room, Ry found a quote that really resonates with our new friend Blake and his beautiful oasis in the desert....

"A great deal of the joy of life consists in doing perfectly, or at least to the best of one's ability, everything which one attempts to do.  There is a sense of satisfaction, a pride in surveying such a work which is rounded, full, exact, complete in all it's parts-which the superficial man, who leaves his work in a slovenly, slipshod, half-finished condition can never know.  It is this conscientious completeness which turns work into art.  The smallest thing, well done, becomes artistic."

Here are some images captured over the weekend from Joshua Tree, Mojave Sands Motel and the stunning sculptures and desert dogs, Agnes and Tucker, adorning the beautiful inn.  If you are headed out to Joshua Tree, Mojave Sands is a must stop....
